U.S. antitrust regulators filed a lawsuit against Amazon, accusing them of using monopoly power to harm consumers and sellers. It is alleged that Amazon made more than $1 billion in extra profit from a secret internal algorithm known as “Project Nessie.” This algorithm raised prices for specific products, and kept them higher when other platforms did the same. The FTC also accused Amazon of turning off its algorithm when it was facing outside scrutiny and back on when no one was watching.
