Ofcom Calls for UK Antitrust Probe

UK communications regulator, Ofcom, has referred the cloud computing industry to the Competition and Markets Authority for an antitrust investigation. The call for further scrutiny comes as US and EU regulators investigate cloud computing companies like Microsoft and Amazon, after customers complained about being “locked in” to a single provider. Customers are faced with technical challenges and high “egress fees” if they decide to switch services. There is a growing concern with the low level of competition. Chief executive of the Competition and Markets Authority says, “Strong competition ensures a level playing field so that market power doesn’t end up in the hands of a few players.”
